PASTOR'S PERSPECTIVE

Pastor Bill

As we celebrate our freedoms as a nation this Independence Day—
here is some food for thought....

What would have happened had Moses tried to figure out what was needed to accomplish God's command?

One of the biggest mathematical miracles in the world was required in the desert.  Moses led the people of Israel to the desert.  What was he going to do with them?  They had to be fed, and feeding 3½ million people required a lot of food.  According to the U. S. Army's Quartermaster General, Moses needed 1,500 tons of food a day, filling two freight trains each a mile long.

For cooking the food it took 4,000 tons of wood and a few more freight trains each a mile long—just for one day!  And they were 40 years in transit!

For drinking and washing dishes, it took 11,000,000 gallons each day.

They had to get across the Red Sea in one night.  If they went on a narrow path, double file, the line would be 800 miles long and require 35 days and nights to get through.  To cross in one night there had to be a space in the Red Sea 3 miles wide so they could wlak 5,000 abreast.

A campground the size of Rhode Island, or a total of 750 square miles was required every day!

Do you think Moses figured this all out before he left?  I think not.  You see, Moses believed in God.  He had faith that God would take care of everything.  Each of us can rejoice—we have the same God!

May God continue to bless America and our world with His peace.

Your Friend in Christ,

Pastor Bill

MARTHA SOCIETY

A bit of history…

Services were held in the American Legion building when our Savior Lutheran Church was organized in the fall of 1955 as a mission church.  The ladies met in members’ homes, and with the spiritual help of Pastor Bolin, chose the name MARTHA SOCIETY with a mission to serve the Lord.  They immediately assumed the care of the altar and visited the sick.  During 1956 they formed the constitution and by-laws.

Our first church was completed in 1959.  The ladies then felt they would like to become part of LWML as they had a “home” to invite LWML ladies for rallies.  Early in March 1960 we became a part of LWML.  We participate in giving of our ‘mites’ monthly to help fund our District’s missions.

The present…

When the need arises, our ladies are ready to help, with the last few years raising approximately $3,000 annually to fund special endeavors.  Yearly we host a Card Party/Salad Luncheon, a White Elephant/Bake Sale and a Christmas Cookie Walk.  We also provide requested funeral luncheons.  Money is distributed to our Concordia Seminaries, in both St. Louis and Fort Wayne—Lutheran Bible Translators—Lutheran Heritage Foundation—Lutheran Counseling & Family Services and many others including disaster relief and our own Social Ministry.

Our Committees consist of:

Altar Guild – alternating women serve monthly
Kitchen – keep kitchen clean and stocked with supplies
Love ‘n Care – visit sick and shut-ins
Quilts – cut squares and make quilts for LWR
Special Sales – sell Christian cards/napkins
Stamps – cancelled stamps are saved for missions
Sunshine – cards are sent to shut-ins and bereaved

We help out where we can at Camp Luther—present food baskets for shut-ins at Christmas—annually pack boxes of quilts, sweaters and soap for Lutheran World Relief.  Join our circle of ladies of all ages for dessert & coffee and fun & fellowship each 2nd Wednesday of the month at noon.  Be our guest!

PLANNED ACTIVITIES

July 18 and 19 our annual "Attic Sale/Bake Sale" (Formerly known as the White Elephant and Bake Sale).  Mark your calendars-more discussion at our June picnic/meeting.  Watch next newsletter for details.

NEWS and NOTES

notes and information thought to be of interest by your Webmaster.

HELP! - Need a little help for a special task?  Or would you like to make yourself available to assist others in one of the following areas.  Please give one of these folks a call:

Rides (Medical, Shopping, Church) Judy Jousma 479-5805
Handy person or helper Theresa Berkelman 479-1412
Light housekeeping Doris Marquard 479-2180

SAVE YOUR ALUMINUM CANS - Our Youth are collecting cans for recycling.  If you have cans to donate, please bring them to the church and place them in the mesh bin behind the garage.  Please bring aluminum cans only.  Thank you for your support.

FLOWERS - When you sign up for flowers for the Altar, Pulpit or Lectern (Brass stands), please sign up early.  Soneone will call you for the reason for the gift (birthday, memorial anniversary, etc.).  This will insure that recognition for the gift will be in the bulletin.  JUST A REMINDER:  The cost of flowers is your responsibility, the church does not provide them free of charge, so make sure you use the envelopes provided at the flower calendar for your money.  Thank You.

CANCELLED STAMPS - ALUMINUM POP CLIPS

  • Aluminum Pop Clips from sodas are collected by several organizations in our area.  These are sent to Marshfield where they are redeemed as recycled aluminum.  Maney is sent to the Ronald McDonald House.  This house is a benefit for parents with unmarried children (under 21) who have a serious health problem.  Parents are allowed to live in this house while their child is under physician care.  It is very affordable for couples who need financial aid.

WORDS TO LIVE BY - Our "Words to Live By" radio broadcast is one of our greatest tools for Evangelism.  This certainly is in keeping with God's command to "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." (Mark 16:15)
This program has touched many people.  We have received many good comments and responses to these, a lot from people of other denominations and churches as well as from guests and visitors.  We need your help to keep this program operating.  There is a sign-up sheet in the hallway (between the narthex and fellowship hall) for anyone who wishes to sponsor one broadcast - or a week - or a Saturday.  Any amount will be greatly appreciated and God pleasing.  What a perfect way to honor someone's birthday, anniversary or any special occasion.  It could be a memorial or "Thanks to God for His blessings."

UPDATES
  • QUILTS for World Relief - Under the auspices of Martha Society, ladies of Our Savior Lutheran Church have been assembling quilts for world relief for many years.>  Their endeavors usually resulted in over 100 quilts per year.  These quilts are distributed worldwide wherever the need is greatest.     Ladies of all ages are encouraged to join us each month on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Thursdays from 10 a.m. to as long as you would like to stay.  A brief description of what we do is:

    1. Sort and measure material that has been donated
    2. Cut a top and filler (old sheet) to about 60 x 80 inches
    3. Cut a bottom to about 64 x 84 inches
    4. Layer this material and fold edges over 2 inches - Pin all around
    5. Sew all around 'binding' (preferably zigzag)
    6. Tie quilt, using embroidery floss

Each quilt is unique--some are all squares, or strips, or all in one piece.  Some material needs to first be washed--others ironed in order to lay flat for assembly.  You needn't actually sew to assemble these quilts.  We need ladies to cut squares.  Join in the camaraderie and fun!  This is God-pleasing work and Lutherans are know for it!

  • CHRISTIAN CARDS - On display in the fellowship hall (or top drawer in file cabinet) year-round.  Help yourself & leave money in box provided.  Thanks!

  • GLOBAL HEALTH MINISTRIES - Knitted or crocheted bandages for patients in third world countries.  Make your spare time count.  Directions are on hallway table near parking lot.  Anyone can do this as they are simple and do not have to be perfect--but they must be made with all cotton yarn or thread.  We will assembly them in fall and mail in one large box.  DO A GOOD DEED!

  • LWR COFFEE & TEA - I hope those of you who sampled it are pleased with the flavors and freshness.  More will be ordered when asked.  Let's keep helping the small coffee grower.   Any questions?-- call Mae Ruth at 477-1220

  • LWML (Lutheran Women's Missionary League)
    • LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION - The name has a nice 'ring' to it.  Isn't that what all we women are about?  The Lutheran Women's Missionary League is an official auxiliary of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.  It has a membership of over 250,000!  The LWML focuses on affirming each woman in her relationship with Christ to enable her to be in ministry among the people of the world.  For 60 years the organization has been encouraging and equipping women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to financially support global missions.

    • THE MITE BOX - The Mite Box is based on the Biblical account of the widow's mite (Luke 21:1-4).  The Mite Box is intended for regular contributions of "mites"--offerings above and beyond the support given to the congregation and the Synod.  Mite Box contributions amount to millions of dollars that fund district and national mission grants and implement the LWML program.
